Truly we do understand how difficult it is to share your thoughts with someone with cancer or their families. Bridget, since she was a little girl, has always started any communication where she has been hurt, totally normal, then its "Daaaaaad" and she breaks out crying. Well on the ride home from the last PRRT treatment we were not 5 minutes into the ride and I sensed a " Daaaaaad" coming on and I was right. What followed is shared below from Bridget's own words
THIS IS WHAT YOU DON'T SAY TO A CANCER PATIENT!
And this was the short version, the longer one was all about what someone her age should be doing. Good people say dumb things but it still hurts and unwinds emotional progress that's being made on staying centered.
Some other don'ts
- This has to be so hard!
- Don't you wish you could trade places?
- Can you believe this is happening
- This really sucks!
You get the idea...
Here is what to say
" I cannot presume to know how you feel as I am not in your shoes. Just know I care about you all, am there for you if you need anything and I will continue to offer kind thoughts and prayers! That would be perfect.. Oh and drop a card in the mail on occasion, acts speak louder than words!
Merry Christmas Journeywoman and Journeyman!
